What is a Sub Agent in a workflow, and what can it do?
A Sub Agent is like an AI assistant inside a workflow. It uses the tools you give it to do work for you, such as research.
- Add a Sub Agent step and write the prompt for what it should do. You can use variables from earlier steps, for example a website URL collected by a form.
- Give it tools, such as web search, web extract (pull the content from a page) and web research (compile a full report with multiple citations, for example everything about a company before a meeting). The agent uses the tools when it needs them.
- Optionally define the output. A defined output gives you structured data as JSON, for example a business description, business hours and number of reviews, which you can save into custom contact fields or use in later steps.
- Save the step before running it.
To put what it finds into the CRM, follow it with the Contact Lookup step, which creates and de-duplicates in one: it checks whether a contact already exists with that phone number or address, and if there is no match it creates one with the fields you specify. The contact can then go into a marketing workflow.
Examples: a form collects a website URL, the Sub Agent researches the business, and the next step creates a website from the business description it returned. A Sub Agent can look up a property and its estimated value, or find a company on social media if you tell it to. A custom AI demo can work this way too: a Sub Agent reads a prospect's website and writes the prompt and opening message, then the system calls the prospect and the agent talks with that prompt and opening message.
Results depend on what is on the pages it reads. In one test it found a home's list price but not its estimate.
